So many books, so little time!

Book Activities

Activities Paired with Book List:

1)  Steve Jobs:  After reading this book, you now know that Steve Jobs had some pretty unique eating habits!  He was a vegan and ate a lot of fruit.  Please join us in the library "small group" room on July 7th for a yoga session and "make your own smoothie" activity!

2)  Looking for Alaska:  Please join us at the library for a planning session on how we can fund raise for a local teen organization (suicide prevention, teen drug abuse program, etc.).  We will be creating art work after reading our graphic design book....let's work together to plan a fundraiser where we can sell our art work at the gallery!

3)  Go:  A Kidd's guide to graphic design:  Choose one of the projects from the book to complete.  At the end of our summer program, we will be having a gallery to display your work!  Please wear your fanciest attire for the event (July 31).  Sparking cider and fancy finger foods will be served.

4)  Divergent:  Join us on July 15th to create and complete in an obstacle course activity!  (Team building day with trust activities). We will be joined by the Youth Activities directors from the Parks and Rec department!

5) The crossover:  After reading the book, create a shape (concrete) poem about your favorite sport!

6)  The maze runner:  After reading the book, create a maze that, when solved, spells a secret message!  The mazes will be on display in the library once completed.

7) Bruiser:  After reading the book, create a comic strip that shows you with a special superhero power!

8) Hero:  After reading the book, make a list of 10-15 words that you think describe a "hero".  Write the words in big "super hero" font with lots of colors!

9) The graveyard book:  Pick One of the following activties:  (1) learn to dance the Macabray (there's a video on YouTube here) Or (2) visit a graveyard, find a headstone or monument that interests you, and do a rubbing like they did the book.

10) The scar boys:  Video game challenge!  You can play Guitar Hero which will be set up in the library and the highest score for the Ramones' song "I Wanna Be Sedated" wins a prize!  Contest will be ongoing until the end of summer reading.

11) Laughing at my nightmare:  Visit the "Laughing at my Nightmare" website and write Shane Burcaw an email about what his story meant to you.

12) Guy in real life:  Design an online avatar and profile that describes the real "you" perfectly.  How would it change to make you digitally appealing to other online gamers (would you still be a boy or a girl, and is that ok?)  Use program like 3dmyself, doppelme, avachara, or bistrips.
